When investigating the rich culture that makes Bhutan and it's people unique, I found that it was most helpful to gain insight from a native. So I looked to my partner Sonam, who gave the following description of her Bhutanese culture:
“For the Bhutanese people, culture is everything. If you come to Bhutan, the first thing that you will notice apart from the mountains will be the architecture. Bhutan has preserved it’s architecture and almost all houses have maintained the look and style that has been there since long ago…so for a minute you might feel like you've entered a medieval era. The second thing that you will notice is the dress. Bhutanese wear their national dress everyday; it's called "kira" for women and "gho" for men. In almost every Bhutanese home, you will find an altar room, where there are statues of ancient Buddhist figures like the Buddha, and other enlightened figures. Rituals like offerings and prayers to the gods for the well being of the people, the crops are a part of the daily existence of Bhutanese people; so you will find many colorful prayer flags and temples, monasteries dotting the hills and mountains of Bhutan.”
